Founded in 1987 Plexus has a long history as a supplier of UNIX based systems and became an early leader in the image processing market. The development of Plexus' market leading application development and imaging tools, as well as partnerships with leading database vendors lead to the amalgamation of Plexus with Recognition Equipment.

The Plexus brand and products continued to go from strength to strength with the development of Workflow and Optical Storage products. In December 1995 Plexus, BancTec and Recognition Equipment completed a merger. Plexus remains an independent but wholly owned subsidiary of BancTec, Inc.
